What makes a person want to learn to swallow a sword? And how is it possible? In this lecture (and live demonstration!), world-renowned sword swallower Dan Meyer and sideshow historian Marc Hartzman will discuss the mysterious and dangerous art of sword swallowing (yes, it’s entirely real!), the anatomy of it, and the remarkable history of sword swallowers from the early 1800s to the late 1900s.
This event will celebrate the launch of Meyer and Hartzman’s new book, To The Hilt: A Sword Swallower’s History of Sword Swallowing, available from Schiffer Books. The book delves into the lives of over 100 sword swallowers, including personal stories from many of today’s top living sword swallowers. It’s a collection like no other, guaranteed to amaze, delight, and occasionally disgust with every turn of the page.
Sword swallower Dan Meyer is widely recognized as the world's leading expert on sword swallowing as president of the Sword Swallowers Association International, founder of World Sword Swallower’s Day, global TED speaker, and winner of the 2007 Ig Nobel Prize in Medicine for medical research on sword swallowing. Known by Guinness World Records and Ripley’s Believe or Not as one of the world’s top sword swallowers, Meyer holds 40 world records and has performed on 15 Got Talents, at 15 Ripley’s Believe It or Not museums, on over 100 TV programs, and live in 60 countries around the world.
Marc Hartzman is the author of American Sideshow: An Encyclopedia of History’s Strangest and Most Wondrous Performers (Tarcher/Penguin). Marc has written nearly a hundred articles on sideshow performers for AOL Weird News and Bizarre magazine. In 2022, he was the keynote speaker at Coney Island’s Congress of Curious Peoples and recently released a limited-edition book called Scrapbook of Agnes Schwarzenbacher: The Rubber Skin Lady. He is also the author of nine other books.
