While in Egypt in 1904, Aleister Crowley—the 20th Century's most notorious and influential occultist—had a revelation in which he received an inspired text that would become known as The Book of the Law. This two-part class will unpack this short and intense poetic book that was, according to Crowley, dictated by a non-human intelligence named Aiwass who he considered his Holy Guardian Angel.
The Book of the Law, or Liber AL, would come to define Aleister Crowley's magick, and would become the central text of his new religion of Thelema that continues to flourish today. Poetic, cryptic and blasphemous, Crowley claimed the book announced the dawning of a new age ruled over by the Egyptian god of War Horus, and a new phase in human evolution:
Horus rules the present period of 2,000 years, beginning in 1904. Everywhere his government is taking root. Observe for yourselves the decay of the sense of sin, the growth of innocence and irresponsibility, the strange modifications of the reproductive instinct with a tendency to become bi-sexual or epicene, the childlike confidence in progress combined with nightmare fear of catastrophe, against which we are yet half unwilling to take precautions.
So what led to this great revelation? How does this incendiary work fit into Crowley's literary oeuvre? What relevance might The Book of the Law have for us in the 21st century, whether we're practitioners of magick or not?
Join occult scholar and practitioner Julian Vayne for a literary adventure into the heart of Crowley's magick as well as a chance to take part in some simple and accessible occult practices inspired by concepts contained in The Book of the Law.
Julian Vayne is a British independent scholar and author with over four decades of experience within esoteric culture, a senior member of the Magical Pact of the Illuminates of Thanateros, he is widely recognized as one of Britain’s leading occultists.
