This didactic and experiential class will explore the intersections of death, psychedelics, and adventures of self-discovery through the lens of transpersonal psychology, mysticism, alchemy, and somatic therapy.

Psychedelics and entheogens have been used by cultures around the world to prepare for and better understand the psycho-spiritual meanings surrounding death and dying. More recent applications in clinical and research settings have utilized psychedelics to reduce end-of-life distress in individuals with terminal diagnoses. The accumulated wisdom of these collective rituals of death can help us deepen our understandings around transitions, ego identification, and living our fullest life. This class will apply this wisdom into useful models for understanding how ‘ego death’ can be understood as a process of washing away that which is no longer necessary so that we may arrive to a deeper connection with ourselves and a more embodied sense of Self.

We’ll begin by exploring various theories and applications around psychedelic healing and historic uses of psychedelics. We will then look at various myths and maps around death and transformation and how they can inform practical applications to self-discovery and personal healing. Students will learn how to utilize tools such as breathwork, artistic exploration, and mindfulness-based somatic skills. Various maps and models will be employed to find deeper layers of themselves to enrich their lives. Art-based activities will tie in the learning and students will have a chance to present their artistic reflections on the final class. Students will come away with knowledge, skill-sets, and experiences that will deepen the breadth and depth of their human experience and give them practical tools for their lives in the context of the living and dying.

Rich Tyo is a psychotherapist, musician, arts educator, and grass-roots community organizer. He teaches psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy and MDMA-Assisted therapy in Canada and in Europe and co-founded the Neuma Centre for Psychedelic Safety and Response. He is a published poet and writes songs on his spare time.
