What happens after we die?
The concept that our consciousness ends with the death of the body a new one. In this eight-session course, Mythologist Alicia King Anderson, Ph.D., will lead us on exploration of the ways different cultures have answered this question in a variety of times and places.
Over the course of seven sessions, we will be introduced, via illustrated lectures, to a variety of literary and mythological descriptions of the afterlife from around the world, with a special focus on Norse, Greek, and Christian traditions. We will also explore the tradition of books of the dead from Tibet, Egypt, and the Mayan world, and share discussions about the many possible afterlife possibilities. Throughout the course, we will discuss reincarnation, shamanic practices, spirits of land and place, and working with ancestors. Together, we will explore how reports of near death experiences are challenging the assumptions of scientific materialism. The eighth session will be dedicated to participants’ artistic and creative responses to the material.
Throughout, Anderson will draw not only on her academic studies in Mythological Studies and Depth Psychology but also her shamanic and chaplaincy training.
Instructor Alicia King Anderson’s path toward obtaining her Ph.D. in Mythological Studies and Depth Psychology includes her own experience of a spiritual calling to serve the Goddess, shamanic training, psychopomp work, near-death experiences, and chaplaincy training.
