Reversals—cards appearing upside down in a spread —both confuse and intrigue readers, dividing traditions between people who won’t interpret them and others, more intrepid explorers, who see them as a vast, perplexing but insightful territory of information. Like a rearview mirror, reversals can allow us to contemplate the blind spots of a tarot reading, shedding light on what’s invisible and out of reach, cracking open the infraworld of the arcanas.
More than just a “shadow interpretation,” reversals are polysemic and rather spellbinding, like a magical palindrome, adding depth and spice to the often monolithic interpretations of our seventy eights cards. Like Foucault’s heterotopia or Stranger Things Upside Down, the reversal is a land of intensity and contradiction, an uncanny reality in which it takes a minute to find our bearings.. So, let’s take our lanterns and our hiking shoes and climb up this inverted mountain together.
In this class, through historical examples, metaphorical digressions as well as many practical exercises and games, we’ll learn together how to understand their own language. Puncturing through the other side of this mirror, we’ll stroll at ease in the bizarre lands of reversals, and will learn to appreciate the subtlety they bring to a reading, stimulating our intuition and allowing us to connect deeper with the cards symbolism.
This class is part of the “Dissecting the Tarot” serie,s a Tarot class program aimed for beginner and experienced readers alike, studying technique, practice and tarot tradition through the lens of art, history, mythology and folklore.
