How do we work with creating art connecting to the spiritual as theme and/or method? In this 6-week class, taught by Norwegian artist Tanja Thorjussen, we will find inspiration from our foremothers, explore magical practical techniques to find our own expression, and create new art in a workshop setting.
This class will look at visionary art pioneers such as Hilma af Klint and St. Hildegard Von Bingen, who created artworks from their visions; Leonor Fini, Remedios Varo, and Leonora Carrington, who explored witchcraft, mythology and magic in their work; and Emma Kunz, who worked with a pendulum to create healing art.
We will explore basic simple techniques to access our inner creative intuitive artist's voice and explore our own expression. How do we harness an image? What does it entail to get an idea? Is it a vision?
We will use drawing or watercolor/ink on paper as the main medium in class. Drawing is an accessible medium which everybody has used before and we will primarily sketch, take notes and explore in class. However you are free to create a finished or more elaborate artwork for the last class if you wish.
You do not need to have experience with art or magic making to participate. Anyone with an open mind and pencil and paper can participate and there will be plenty of time in class to share and to ask questions.
The facilitator, Tanja Thorjussen, will walk you through the practical aspects of both drawing and connecting to the magical. Tanja believes that all artists and creatives have the potential to be shamans of our time. A shaman is a person who can access the spirit realm and use divine information to heal. In this way, by gathering material and knowledge in the spiritual and physical world, the artist can translate this to images and stories which are needed.
In these transitory times, what stories should be told now? What images do we need for our future to be created? What type of healing and restoration can artworks contribute with? Through her artistic praxis, Thorjussen has always been attracted to mythology, fairy tales, and the spiritual aspects of animals and nature as inspiration. She is excited to share how you can also connect to these aspects in your life.
Tanja Thorjussen (b. 1970) is an artist living in Oslo (NO). Her artistic medium spans between drawing, sculpture, performance and art in public space. Through speculative research her artistic practice revolves around how ancient art can inform the present into the future. At the current exhibition at Museum of Archaeology – UiS in Stavanger (NO) she is showing artworks based on historical animal figurines from the collection, speculating on its meaning through artistic methodology such as drawing and intuitive listening. Her artistic focus is on the mystic and spiritual in nature and animals, hydrofeminism, and the science embedded in archaeology, indigenous knowledge and ancient mythology. Thorjussen is educated at KHIB in Bergen (NO) and Parsons The New School in New York (USA).
