Handmade Zapatista Dolls from Chiapas, Mexico
Handmade Zapatista Dolls from Chiapas, Mexico
These Zapatista dolls—hand-made by indigenous artisans in Chiapas, Mexico—lovingly depict members of The Zapatista Army of National Liberation.
Each of them has an exquisitely detailed traditional costume made from local textiles, complete with identity-protecting mask, back satchel, and tiny wooden gun.
Simultaneously adorable and ominous, these dolls—once common but now increasingly rare—have a wonderful sense of presence, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection of the unusual or the exquisite.
The Zapatistas are a socialist revolutionary group of indigenous people of Chiapas, the southernmost state of Mexico. Since 1994, the group has been challenging the Mexican government, seeking indigenous control over local resources and land, and bringing attention to the impoverished and marginalized populations they believe the government of Mexico fails to acknowledge.
Chiapas is a state in Mexico known for the tenacity of its indigenous cultures. Many of these groups trace their lineage back to the ancient Mayans, and they express their cultural identity by wearing traditional costumes, textiles and embroideries.
Note: Because each piece is handmade, there are variations between individual examples.
Each doll is approximately 3 inches tall.
