Manly Palmer Hall is remembered as a man whose grasp of the essence of the spiritual beliefs, philosophical principles, and symbols of antiquity was reflected in hundreds of books and thousands of lectures. Hall’s was an extraordinary life, entwined with the original idealists of formative Southern California at the dawn of the 20th century, and Los Angeles, the city that nourished them. His friends in high places included California Lt. Gov. Goodwin Knight and movie stars Bela Lugosi and Gloria Swanson. He was also swept away by questionable enthusiasms like the ability of ants to carry away the negative vibrations of humans like little pack mules. This talk will explore the danger of putting metaphysical teachers on a pedestal, assuming they are infallible and in command of sacred powers.
