Tonight. Dr. Ruben G Mendoza will presents his recent research that clarifies the profound antiquity, origins, and scale of ritual human sacrifice in ancient Mesoamerica. Drawing on some of the most compelling evidence on Mesoamerica yet brought to bear—as explored in his recent book Ritual Human Sacrifice in Mesoamerica: Recent Findings and New Perspectives—he will survey sacrificial rituals, including dismemberment/curation of trophies, and cannibalism from across Mesoamerica through the centuries into the first millennium CE. He will also touch upon present-day rites of Amerindian communities throughout Mesoamerica, including paying homage to the earth and sky deities by sacrificing and consuming animal surrogates.
