For over a century, the robot has served as an object of fascination, fantasy and fear. One of the  central anxieties of our time has been that of the all-powerful, intelligent machine that will supersede human beings and reign supreme. This free talk will explore the history of this idea, and examine at the ways in which the mythology of artificial life is intimately entangled with the history of occult and forbidden things: magic, heresy, and the Faustian yearning for power.
