Myth and folklore are known for their hybrid creatures—minotaurs, mermaids, sphinx, and satyrs—as well as bizarre transformations between gods and animals, humans and objects, angels and monsters, underlings and kings. This talk engages this mythic phenomenon, especially as it concerns feminine figures (typically adolescents) who must change form in order to escape or transcend sexual violation or divine abduction. These stories will be offered as analogical expressions of rage and healing, as guiding images for the moments when real-world drastic times call for drastic measures and drastic myths.
