FREE EVENT: Thoroughly Modern Fairies: How Science, Industry and Nostalgic Media Shaped the Fae-Folk: A Live, Online, Illustrated Lecture with Artist and Educator Jason Lahman

FREE! Learn more and RSVP HERE

Over 400 years indigenous European spirits were filtered through new epistemologies, religious commitments and popular visual tropes. Fairies helped people understand the inexplicable, and to rescue exquisite realms that that were feared to be vanishing. Fairies, as we know them, are the alluring assemblages of poets, playwrights, anthropologists, folktale collectors, mystical painters, biologists and spiritualists. This talk will explore how shifts brought about by the expansion of western science, industrialization and mass media worked together to create the thoroughly modern fairy.
