Selecting the texts for your own funeral service was a common practice in early modern Germany. Prince Heinrich II Posthumus von Reuß took this devotional act to an extreme by commissioning a bespoke “German Requiem” and an ornate sarcophagus covered in sacred text. These exquisitely beautiful artifacts–musical and material–reflect the Prince’s deeply personal relationship with art, theology, and his own death.
This talk examines the rich theological symbolism embedded in both monuments in the context of 17th-century ars moriendi. After the lecture, participants will have the option to listen to the full Musikalishe Exequien and stay for an optional Q & A session.
