More than half of American adults and more than seventy-five percent of young Americans believe in intelligent extraterrestrial life. This level of belief rivals that of belief in God. This talk will examine the mechanisms at work behind the thriving belief system in extraterrestrial life, a system that is changing and even supplanting traditional religions. She will also explore Cosmism, a belief system that informed the scientists of the formative Russian and American Space Programs, and similar beliefs emerging within communities of technology programmers and venture capitalists, and find precedents for this belief system within traditions as varied as Catholicism to popular philosophy.
