Cinematic Surrealism in Los Angeles: Maya Deren and David Lynch by Sabina Stent and David Lynch: Cinema’s Uncanny Master by Mary Wild

Admission: $8 - Tickets and more info HERE

In 1943, Maya Deren made Meshes of the Afternoon, a seminal work of American Avant-Garde cinema. Sabina Stent explores its Surrealist themes, connections to Mulholland Drive , and the unconscious influence of Los Angeles as leading to a paranoic state of mind. If Sigmund Freud’s ‘Uncanny’ were manifested in human form, the result would surely be David Lynch. Mary Wild explores his violent, disturbing imagery pitted against a glimmer of ordinariness and magical realism.
