The Sola-Busca tarocchi is a 15th century Italian deck of gaming cards. It is the earliest complete deck of tarot cards in existence, and to this day remains one of the most artistically accomplished, beautiful and unusual artifacts to have emerged from Renaissance elite circles.

Designed and produced in Ferrara for a member of the Venetian elite, it is a complex deck, encoding multiple levels of meaning: literary, historical, metaphysical and magical. Certain figures demonstrate unmistakeable signs of ritual magic designed to invoke the draconian current in its most fierce form: that of the archaic god, Baal Ammon, better known as the Biblical Moloch.

This class will demonstrate how to interpret the deck’s various layers of meaning, and the methods of encryption and decryption employed. Adams will discuss the origins, stages and outcomes of the ritual process, as well as the belief that descendants of the Nephilim—the biblical angelic Watchers—bred with and conveyed the esoteric arts to humanity.

Peter Mark Adams is an author, poet and essayist specializing in the ethnography of ritual, sacred landscapes, esotericism, consciousness and healing. A Philosophy graduate, Peter is pursuing advanced studies in iconology, iconography, Renaissance art and material culture with the Warburg Institute’s School of Advanced Studies. Peter is an Associate Member of the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism (ESSWE); his non-fiction is published by Scarlet Imprint and Inner Traditions; literary prose and poetry by Corbel Stone Press and the Bosphoros Review of Books; and his reviews of both esoterica and literature appear on Paralibrum.com.
