Mexican Sacred Heart Hand Embroidered Detente
Mexican Sacred Heart Hand Embroidered Detente
Beautifully embroidered detentes—protective cloth amulet in the Catholic tradition—were traditionally worn on the body or placed in the home for protection.
On the front, SACRADO CARAZON is stamped and encircles the one side of a sacred heart beautifully hand embroidered over the word JESUS. The heart beams with yellow celestial light and is topped with a cross, three red sprays of blood shoot down below from the barbed thorns that encircle and pierce the heart. The rest of the message finishes along the other side, EN VOZ CONFIO, (Jesus, I trust in you). The text stitched on the back reads DENENTE ENEMIGO, QUE EL CORAZÓN DE JESÛS ESTÁ CONMIGO (Stop enemy, the Heart of Jesus is with me). White printed and embroidered cotton on red felt with a red ribbon-loop at the top.
The Sacred Heart is a common motif in Catholic art, symbolizing Christ’s divine and illimitable love for humanity. The Sacred heart is often depicted on these protective cloth amulets.
