Witches & Fishes by Sir Hesketh Bell and Illustrated by Joanna Dowling from Interesting Editions
Sir Henry Hesketh Bell was a career colonial administrator in Britain's empire beginning in the late 19th century, with posts in Barbados, Dominica, the Bahamas, and Grenada. He moved to the Bahamas in the 1940s where he became interested in tropical fish, magic and Obeah, and authored fictional and non-fictional texts on these topics.
During his time in the Caribbean, Bell also wrote memoirs, colonial histories, and novels, including A Witch’s Legacy. A product of its time, Witches & Fishes is not politically correct but offers a fascinating look at Bell’s musings on belief and ecology at a specific place and time.
This is a hardback edition published in Britain by Edward Arnold and Co. in 1948.
