Mid-late 19th century Santo of St. Sebastian from Considered Trifles

Mexican and carved from one piece of wood, this late 1800’s piece of the martyr Saint Sebastian would have probably have had a place on a home alter or private place of worship.

Saint Sebastian is known for not only have been martyred for being Christian during the third mid century, but martyred twice. The first time he was shot by archers commanded by Diocletian and pierced by arrows so that "..he was as full of arrows as an urchin is full of pricks, and thus left him there for dead." Wikipedia

But then he was discovered by the widow of Castulus, Irene of Rome and when nursed back to full health he went to harrass Diocletian about his treatment of Christian’s and he was ordered to be clubbed to death and his body dumped into the sewer. He was then fished out by Lucina and buried it in the catacombs at the entrance of the cemetery of Calixtus, where now stands the Basilica of St. Sebastian.

Saint Sebastian is considered to be the patron saint of athletes but also to help ward off the plague.

Also there is a connection to Santa Muerte who is sometimes referred to as Santa Sebastiana.
