The mythological Mexica tradition is highly poetic, engrossing, and often brutal. It is full of beautiful, complex narratives that fascinate anyone who comes across them.

Not unlike Greek mythology, this root culture of Mesoamerica—with its stunning pyramids and feathered gods—encompasses a galaxy of stories with deities, heroes and fantastical beasts which are a remarkable cultural universal heritage. These magnjficent stories and their different versions—as well as a few interpretations—will be shared during the course, while we travel through the depths of meaningful sacrifices, religious belief, cosmic symbolism and a little bit of numerology.

In this 4-week online class, we will immerse ourselves into a brief account of selected myths and core religious elements of the Aztec view of the world.

Over the course of 4 sessions, diverse topics will be reviewed:

• Ometeotl and the creation of all

• Many gods, and their origin stories.

• The creation of the universe and time, and the impact of those in earthly life.

• The sun, moon, and other celestial objects.

• The monsters related to religious practice and daily life.

• Also of course, the human, mortal element of it all.

• And finally, the divine interventions; the blood of the gods and the sacred view of sacrifices, along with the usually bloody results of those interactions.

This course is directed to the daring ones who want to get to know more about the Aztec view of the world in a relaxed guided setting, and definitely, not for the faint of heart! There will be blood, feathers and fire!

Teté Montero is a Mexican end-of-life educator, death doula, unicorn enchantress, story teller and weaver, by choice. She is neurodivergent by neurology, a self appointed renaissance woman, a textile artist and teacher. She apprenticed under the care of master weaver Kenzo Jo in textile Saori art while in Japan. In addition, she has studied at University of Cambridge, Harvard University, The Hospice Association, Upaya Zen Center, and the Authentic Presence Organization. Her focus has been in medical studies, contemplative end of life care, medieval studies, socially engaged Buddhism and art. She currently runs a textile art studio in Mexico City with her rambunctious dog Kayi. She is Buddhist too!
