Part immersive self-exploration, part artist’s talk, this intensive workshop goes deep into the psyche to search for authentic connections and insights leading to creative growth. Through research and exercises, you will transform your chosen item into a small physical talisman — a symbolic artifact representing the mythic life of the individual.
During the workshop, Purcell’s archive of inspirational imagery, as well as her extensive experience with the creative process, handcrafts, and personal world making, will guide you through several phases of inquiry. Rebecca Purcell is a multidisciplinary, creative practitioner interested in the evolution of consciousness. She navigates within the spaces between artist, stylist, philosopher, idea-dabbler — the exoteric and the esoteric.
Navigating in this liminal state, Purcell has immersed herself in the world of styling, art, design, and handcraft for over thirty years. Starting with numerous careers in display, Purcell spent the nineties as visual director of the renowned A.B.C. Home while making and showing art in N.Y.C. Known as a pioneer in the modern bohemian aesthetic, she published an interiors book featuring artists’ homes — “Interior Alchemy” (William Morrow 1998). At the end of the nineties, she walked away from her career as a visual director, taking a self-imposed sabbatical to explore the intersection of aesthetics and consciousness, culminating in an elaborate, esoteric project called Organon 9 Worlds. This was followed by free-lance styling and art direction for several home design companies, working primarily with the Anthropologie catalog. She continues to style professionally while art-making and exploring ideas on how to creatively evolve toward a less divisive society.
Regardless of medium, Purcell’s creative process is to take what is at hand and find cohesion by searching for the transcendent whole. She very rarely discards; she reinvents, incorporates, or adds.
Her artwork encompasses writings, styling, small talismanic objects, tiny paintings, installations, design collaborations, and performance.
