Pilgrimage, an ancient tradition undertaken by cultures around the globe, is on the rise. Each year, more and more people set out "on the road" as religious, spiritual or magickal practice. As a result, old myths and new desires are colliding and transforming what a "pilgrimage" might be. In this lecture, Dr. Michelle Oing and Dr. J. Christian Greer will discuss the hallucinogenic power of pilgrimage, drawing on their own experiences as scholar-pilgrims, the insights of speculative fiction, and the latest research on the world's most famous holy roads. Much of the conversation will focus on their book Kumano Kodo: Pilgrimage to Powerspots, which explores the historical conspiracies, bawdy folklore, and ghost stories that animate Japan's oldest pilgrimage route, the Kumano Kodo.
