Although the initial storyline of Forbidden Planet is loosely based on William Shakespeare’s final play The Tempest, the film incorporates a wide array of cultural sources and themes: Near Eastern myth and Biblical narrative, techno-utopianism, imperialist archeology, Freudian psychiatry, theories of mind-control and Cold War America’s obsession with the arms race and interstellar colonization.
