Jean Martin Charcot, the founder of neurology, and his star patient, Blanche Wittmann, known throughout Europe as the “Queen of Hysterics,” were at the center of a fin-de-siecle obsession with hysteria and hypnosis. These entangled medical mysteries continue to fascinate because they dramatize, and at the same problematize, the separation of mind from matter, blurring the boundaries that separate science from fiction, psyche from soma, and medicine from magic.
