This talk will take a look at the iconographic tradition of the diseased Christ in art, including German Gothic crucifixes (in which the body of Christ is covered in leprous lesions), and Matthias Grünewald’s Isenheim Altarpiece (in which Christ suffers from the open sores of ergotism). Why would artists depict the Savior as suffering in such a very human way?
