This illustrated lecture—by Berlin cabaret performer La Pustra— will take a look at the dark and seedy underworld of sex for sale on the streets of depraved Berlin, and discuss our rather morbid fascination with the legendary Babylon-by-the-Spree of the 1920s and why we still associate sexual freedom with modern day Berlin. We will look at Germany’s devastating financial ruin, and the subsequent legality of selling every kind of sex imaginable. We will also learn about a Berlin’s “Einstein of Sex”—a Jewish, homosexual sexologist named Dr Magnus Hirschfeld, who was not only a physician, but also an outspoken advocate for sexual minorities and women, and creator of the Institute of Sexual Research.
