What do you think of when you think of horror? Satanic witches gathered in the dark woods chanting in Latin? Incense billowing above a pentagram? A 300-year-old ghost haunting a home?

The witch and her story have become a staple of the American horror film. She is the sexy, undead vamp looking for eternal life; the ghost seeking revenge; the old crone living in the woods; the satanic ritualist devoted to Satan.

But it hasn't always been that way.

Due to censorship and socio-cultural reasons, the witch was once left nearly completely out of the genre. Why and When did that change?

This lecture, based on the author’s new book Lights Camera Witchcraft, will examine the history of the witch in horror and how she evolved into the fearsome figure, while highlighting the various incarnations she takes within the Hollywood narrative.
