This 6 hour class will explore the history and interconnections between reliquaries, relics, and sentimental tropes. We will examine the genesis of Speaking Reliquaries, or Redende Reliquaire, and the transformation of human remains into objects of veneration, power, and sentiment. For example, the 18th and 19th centuries, the fascination with preserving human hair became both popular and prevalent as a means of keeping a physical relic or memento of a loved one near. The overarching concept behind the reliquary, however, can extend to honoring any item(s) that may resonate with a person, family, or beloved animal

This course will delve into the history of the veneration of human remains and other sentimental objects as memory objects, and participants will design and create their own memory objects utilizing items of personal value. These materials may include hair, teeth, nails, photographs, pieces of fabric, small toys, ceramics, etc.

Students should bring sentimental items and any decorative elements that they wish to incorporate into their work. Instructor will supply a selection of containers and mountings to choose from as well as paint, metallic leaf, decorative papers, small metal components, beads, and adhesives.
