After finding her father-in-law dead after over a week, Erica found herself in a spiral of death anxiety and agoraphobia, and became interested in how people cope day-to-day with the knowledge that they're going to die. She found herself visiting seven festivals for the dead in Mexico, Nepal, Sicily, Thailand, Madagascar, Japan and Indonesia—with a stopover in California and New Orleans. A hybrid of memoir and journalism, This Party's Dead is a journey to discover the fundamental, joyful and unexpected ways people cope with mortal terror. This illustrated talk will go through the seven death festivals, Erica’s investigation into how different cultures deal with death anxiety, and the story that started off this bizarre and wonderful journey.
