According to legend, St Sebastian was a Roman citizen who distinguished himself in battle and rose to become the right hand of the Emperor himself. Sebastian was secretly a Christian, though, a practitioner of an illegal cult in 3rd-century Rome. When this secret was revealed, he was arrested, tied to a post, shot full of arrows and left to die.
Tonight, join us in an illustrated talk about this oft-depicted saint, which will delve into the historic context of his legend, and explore how a military commander revered as a protector against pandemics transformed into a gay icon.
