Sirens... Medusa… The Sphinx… The Baba Yaga… Harpies… Lilith… Succubi… The Furies… The Rusalka… What is so appealing and powerful about the monstrous feminine? Why are these figures and symbols so fascinating and? More importantly, if these archetypes are alive in our psyches, how do we honor and work with them?

This class will explore these questions, and more. Over the course of six session over three weeks, we will ground our study of the monstrous feminine in theoretical foundations, and learn about various figures of the monstrous feminine in all her glory. We will also examine her many aspects, and amplify her meanings, with the goal of sparking curiosity, inspiration, and lively discussion. 

Sessions will begin with an illustrated lecture followed by discussion of the material; the instructor will also provide a list of further reading for those who wish to go further. In the last session, students will be invited to present an artistic or creative response to the material, allowing the active monstrous feminine in each of us to speak.

A Ph.D. in Mythological Studies and Depth Psychology, Alicia K. Anderson is a writer, researcher, and storyteller. Her fairy tale retellings and short stories have appeared in anthologies by Improbable Press, World Weaver Press, Autonomous Press, Roi Faineant Press, No Bad Books Press, and Alpha Mercs Press. Her short retelling of the Medusa myth will be published in an anthology later this summer by Flame Tree Press. Her academic writing about unicorns will be published in books by Vernon Press and McFarland Press in the coming year. Alicia is based in the Land of Enchantment – steeped in the magic of New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
